To say that this post would be a long time coming would be an understatement of catastrophic proportions. Literally catastrophic...well, maybe for me.
My thoughts on writing what are, more or less, glorified diary entries all boil down to one idea for me. Is this person interesting enough to read about?
Reviewing my own blog, taking into account my own past entries, the overwhelming answer about my own work would be "No". Now this isn't a cry of false modesty, but do feel free to leave all the warm and fuzzy comments about yours truly you like *wink!*, it's simply a matter of my interest in blogs and how my own entries fair against my taste. The long and short of it is, I'm currently not that interesting. I work a 9 to 5 as a web designer, I own two cats, I date a guy who likes green bean casserole (I know, I wonder why I stick around too), I mumble when speaking publicly, my hair frizzes, and all this and then some accumulate to a rather dull individual.
However, I'm making strides to start changing that.
A few weeks ago, I was pouring over pixels when a co-worker sent me a link to a blogger. Normally, I read the article that is presented to me and I'm done with it. No blogger has really caught my attention for any prolonged amount of time. I read one entry by the presented blogger and like a stone, I fell. In 72 hours, I read every post on this blog. I couldn't stop. It was like someone dumped my inner child into Willy Wonkas factory and told me to go nuts (with the addition of no peril in this version of a Willy Wonka trip). This blogger who, at this very moment, is having a war of epic portions with the one and only Stephen Colbert, is a woman commonly known as The Bloggess also know as Jenny Lawson. Her writing style, her life, her sense of humor and lack of very few barriers have me enthralled.
Why do I bring this fabulous woman up in a entry about changing my dull existence?
Back July, Ignite Evo, a group about women in social media, held a conference and Mrs.Lawson was asked to speak.
What proceeded from this is possibly one of the silliest, most wonderful speeches I have ever heard.
It was called The Art of Being Furiously Happy and you can click the title to watch the speech in it's entirety.
The speech spoke about the idea of what it means to be happy above and beyond your expectations, and how that can not only change you, but change the people around you. It spoke about what it meant to be truly happy, and what it meant to express yourself in a matter that attains your sense of happiness, even if others find it silly or stupid.
After watching this speech and reading this blog, I realized something. I'm 26 and my life has been nice (and there are some aspects that make me extremely happy), but my life, for the most part, has been incredibly boring.
The worst part? It doesn't need to be.
Living a life of complacent confront has been something that has worked, and works for most people, but not something that has made me ridiculously happy.
I've decided to start working to change that.
I started a livestream about absolute nonsense and try my best to welcome everyone who comes to listen to said nonsense.
I started a twitter game called Music Poker with music connoisseur Paw Dugan
I started work on a webseries called "The Company You Keep"
And I've just gotten started!
Dear people who have had the patience to stick around to this point (kudos!), I promise that more of me and my quest for being furiously happy is coming and will be documented here.
Now get out there and go be furiously happy!!
